Reflection - 12/15
This semester was far more challenging than I anticipated. I began the project with an ambitious plan and a large cast and crew across multiple disciplines and locations. However, due to a combination of logistical issues, time constraints, and shifting circumstances, the Hawaiʻi-based collaborators ultimately did not pan out. As the semester continued, I also lost clarity in my own narrative direction, which meant I was unable to meaningfully incorporate the animation team I had originally assembled.
That loss of direction was deeply frustrating and forced me to confront the gap between ambition and execution. By the end of the semester, the project was reduced to a skeleton crew consisting mainly of Theodore Ignatovsky and Lily Oque. While they accomplished meaningful and solid work under difficult conditions, I ultimately did not fully utilize what we created together. This was not due to a lack of effort on their part, but rather my own struggle to solidify the film’s core vision in time.
Despite this, the semester was an important learning experience. I gained a clearer understanding of the responsibilities that come with directing, especially the need for decisiveness, communication, and adaptability. While the final outcome did not reflect the project’s initial scope, it revealed where I need to grow as a filmmaker and how I can approach future projects with greater clarity and intention.
